Complex and Forensic Mental Health

At AFNC, we focus on supporting people that are affected by ‘complex mental health issues and participants with a mental illness in the criminal justice system, who are at risk of offending or pose a risk to themselves or others. 


Our mental health care is delivered in ways that replace stigma and discrimination with hope, optimism and compassion. We are strong advocates for hope in the face of complex mental illness. We believe that people, when properly supported, have the strength and resiliency to manage their lives. We also believe that people can recover.

Examples of complex mental health conditions

  • Schizophrenia and psychosis

  • Borderline Personality Disorder

  • Bipolar Disorder

  • Post-traumatic stress disorder

  • Co-occurring conditions such as autism, ADHD, or intellectual disability, and experiencing mental health issues.

Positive behaviour support:

  • Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is an evidenced-based intervention service that supports people with challenging behaviours, as well as their family members and support networks

  • Our services aim to reduce challenging behaviours by helping carers, families and support people with effective strategies to respond to the challenging behaviours

Our mental health nurse practitioner will help you improve your mental and emotional wellbeing and reach your goals. At AFNC, we have qualified and experienced mental health professionals, each holding the appropriate registrations and qualifications. They provide you with the best support possible, and help you develop your independence and improve your wellbeing.

Psychosocial Recovery Coaching

A psychosocial recovery coach is a new NDIS service designed to support individuals with a psychosocial disability to take more control of their lives and to better manage the complex challenges of day-to-day living.

Recovery Coaching is included in your NDIS budget as ‘Capacity Building’. Talk to your NDIS Support Coordinator about incorporating Recovery Coaching into your current NDIS Plan.

Psychosocial Recovery Coaching Supporting people living with a psychosocial disability to achieve their own unique goals and live their best lives.

At AFNC, we provide ongoing support on your recovery journey.

Psychosocial Recovery Coach has expert knowledge of mental health and/or lived experience with a psychological condition, making them a specialist of sorts in the field.

Recovery coaches work with individuals with psychosocial disability to:

  • Develop a recovery-enabling relationship.

  • Increase awareness of choice and control

  • Identify individual goals and develop strategies to achieve them.

  • Provide ongoing support and engagement. 

  • Build individual capacity, increase recovery skills, resilience and decision making.

This allows for shared responsibility in the recovery process and empowers individuals to make decisions and choices about their lives as well as increase confidence and promote their independence.
